After looking at outer seals/bearings, my mechanic said the rear differential needs to be replaced. Looking at ~$ for a used rear axle and.

So I HAVE read all I could find on fluids recommended, and I still have one question because my Xterra is getting done Monday. It is a SE.

Do you recommend I clean the breather first? The rebuild will get you back to new condition with a 1 yr warranty if he sources the parts. Quote message in reply? Mine weeps a little more then that. A k miles on a used replacement axle is not what I would consider.

The used rear-end has approx. The truck also needs rear suspension leaf springs are dead , and is due for new tires. Wondering how wise it is to put a used part in that may itself be near the end of its service life. Would I be better off getting an estimate to rebuild the gears from a transmission shop? TIA for any insights. Last edited by Nelly; at Are both your transfer case and axle bad? That seams like a lot. I take it you don't know anything about car parts, so let's start there. The rear axle is not the same as a transfer case TC. The TC puts you in 4wd or 2wd. The rear axle is what essentially turns the rear wheels. There is a driveshaft in between the two.

The transfer case is near the front wheels. If the rear axle needs replacing, sounds like the differential is the culprit and if it is making noises, it's likely more than seals and bearings. As mentioned, those can be replaced for cheap. Probably the gears are shot too. Or are you talking replacing both transfer case and axle?

A k miles on a used replacement axle is not what I would consider. Given the info posted, can you trust this shop? Word of advice to readers: Last edited by whatnext; at Sorry, not a mechanic - used the terms differential and transfer case interchangeably. Originally Posted by Nelly View Post.

Based on my 4. The rebuild will get you back to new condition with a 1 yr warranty if he sources the parts. And if you wheel and ever had the desire to re-gear this would be an ideal time.
