    Volvo XC40 review: a safe, sophisticated and singularly Swedish SUV

    Please refresh the page and retry. Solid, middle class, safe and ever-so slightly dull, a Volvo seems to typify the late Michael Bond's image of Henry and Mary Brown, who took Paddington into their home at 32, Windsor Gardens.

    Wonder what they'd make of this car, the cheeky XC40, with its 'tough little robot' looks, kicked up rear panel that comes at the expense of parking vision, and door pockets large enough for a crate of marmalade?

    With the old roughy-toughy Skoda Yeti now replaced by the anodyne Karoq, perhaps this quaint-looking Volvo deserves a break. The mid-sized SUV crossover market is growing faster than new products can be launched at it and the premium end is the fastest growing.

    Volvo, with its big XC60 and XC90 SUVs, needed something rather special to do battle with well-established rivals and XC40, while owing little to its big sisters, is still pretty good-looking with its wilfully clam-shelled bonnet, curved-up grille and those cheeky little Swedish flag tags on the front wings, even though the car is actually built in Gent, Belgium. And if you think the coachwork's pretty 'out there', the cabin brings on a double take.

    It uses the Sensus screen technology from the XC90 and XC60, which is mainly good, though the nine-inch centre touch screen and T he design is different, certainly, with long horizontal bands across the facia linking to scalloped door panels. The door bins are huge and full length thanks to moving the bass speakers from there to behind the dash. There's also an optional Harman Kardon stereo, which is capable of making a bear's ears fizz. S avings have been made, of course, and the cabin's panel mouldings are bigger and cheaper, and the door cards are made of a weird felt made of recycled drinks bottles.

    It's far from disastrous, though, with genuinely delightful and useful details. The front seats are capacious with lots of adjustment although you sit high and can't see the car's corners.

    The rear bench isn't that wide, and leg and head room aren't particularly generous; five adults will be a squash. At litres including underfloor storage, the boot is big enough and while the materials aren't very premium, there's clever origami storage solutions in there as well as a completely flat 1.
