Its nippy, easy to drive, comfortable, with all the extras of a car twice the price. Blind spot warning works well, by placing the warning light inside the vehicle, vs on the mirror as in some other cars, you can actually see the warning in even on bright sunny days. The cabin is also of high quality, and in terms of tech this Volvo has all the safety features you could want. In particular the adaptive cruise allows for easy freeway driving, just set the speed and it keeps a safe distance between you and the car in front, even in stop, start traffic!

    Volvo V40 T5 R-Design new car review

The flipside is that the Volvo offers a well-built, safe and solid, if slightly cramped, alternative to other more common premium rivals. In R-Design trim, the V40 certainly looks the part and is becoming more visible as other new Volvo models further up the range grow in popularity. The range is far reaching, even yeilding a lifted Cross-Country model, and offers a range of Ford derived four-cylinder petrol and diesel options.

The most powerful Volvo V40 is the T5 engined version. Those that drive on the motorway a lot will be more interested in the D2 and D3 diesels. Ironically, specify that car in the sporty looking R-Design trim and it becomes slower again. At a glance, the V40 engine line-up is easy to understand.

In time all V40s will be powered by 2. The T2, T3 and T4 are turbocharged 1. The four-cylinder D4 is significantly quicker yet also more efficient. It bodes well for the Volvo V40 that it shares its core platform with the Ford Focus, though the Swedes are responsible for the set-up, giving the V40 its own springs, dampers and power steering calibration. Neither, sadly, is there any genuine communication between the tread blocks of the front tyres and your hands.

A three-mode variable assistance system allows drivers to choose their favourite weighting, but it does nothing for feedback. Wheel spin is all too easy to elicit in the faster V40s, as they have an issue with traction. Indeed, the V40 drives best in its more basic formats.

Bump absorption is pretty good and the car glides over a decent road, but push beyond eight tenths and it struggles to control wheel movements over mid-corner bumps.

That further loosens traction and adds up to a frustrating experience, certainly for those expecting hot hatch like dynamics in the range-topping T5 model. The V40 features tactile interior design materials with intuitive controls. The cabin is also of high quality, and in terms of tech this Volvo has all the safety features you could want.

Compared to modern rivals like the Audi A3, the V40 is starting to lag behind. In higher spec Inscription or R-Design Pro spec, the V40 can feel very plush indeed, while trendy finishes like Copper on the floating dash still look relatively fresh. The V40 Cross Country tries to offer a slightly more rugged appeal with heavy grained leathers and metallic interior finishes if that is your thing.

The V40 is still one of the sportiest looking cars in its class, looking especially sleek next to the likes of the Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3. The changes in the facelift package were subtle as a result, being nothing more than a design amendment to align the V40 more closely with newer Volvo models. Alongside these, the front grille and the rear bumper have received a very subtle change, but that is about it.

If there is one warning it would be that some brighter colours alongside smaller wheels can make the V40 look a little chunky, yet the flipside of that is bigger wheels do play havoc with the ride quality.
